The Art of Cob Building
During April and June 2009, Orchard Barn hosted two exciting cob-building courses. The first was a one-day course during which participants built Olive the Pizza Oven
The second course consisted of 5 days during which students rebuilt the lower part of an old cob wall using the original brick and flint foundations. Volunteers from all over the globe helped to complete the wall during the wonderfully long and dry summer! Photos on the right and below show the early stages of the wall. See how the wall progresses. .
Cob is a fantastic material to work with. Firstly, most of the ingredients are totally free. Secondly it makes strong, resilient walls. Thirdly, it is great for sculpting with. Fourthly, making it is a great community activity. Fifthly, it is a fun way to get some exercise! We’ll be doing more – watch this space.
