Tree to Timber the Traditional Way

10 -4 Saturday 28th February 2009

Ringshall Village Hall, Suffolk, UK

“What an interesting and informative day you arranged last Saturday at Ringshall. It was truly inspirational and so encouraging to find that so many people attended. Thank you and all your colleagues and guest speakers/demonstrators who worked so hard to arrange and deliver the day”.  Jane and Paul Heard.

The line up for the day consisted of:

Rick Lewis of Traditional Oak Carpentry demonstrated the ancient craft of Hewing. He converted a local Oak log into a beam using only a couple of axes and a chalk line! Rick also gave a presentation about Traditional Timber Framing Techniques.

Jason Roberts of Greenman Horse-loggers delivered a recently felled oak from Willisham on his new horse-drawn 8-wheeled cart. Jason talked about the Uses of Horses in Woodland Management.

Sarah Partridge of OBee Community Interest Company talked about how she is getting local trees converted into timber to repair Orchard Barn and the Green Oak Timber Framing Repair courses.

Gary Battell, Woodland Advisor for Suffolk County Council spoke about Discovering the History and Function of Suffolk Woods.

Local miller Andrew Davison, demonstrated the precision and portability of his mobile Sawmill.

Becky Westover demonstrated how to make roof shingles from local Oak.

Richard Bates demonstrated using his pole lathe using local Ash.

A big thank-you to Gary Battell and the Anglian Woodland Project for supporting this event, and to everyone involved in making the day flow really easily.
