About the old orchard
Scroll down for 1838 tithe map of Orchard Barn and photo of our first exploration into the old orchard.
It was (and still is) an unchartered wildlife reserve!
Orchard trees (varieties as yet unidentified)
One ancient Pear
Five old Apples
Two Walnut
An increasing number of Gages
One elderly stoned fruit (looks like more pointed Gage)
Several Hazel (one reported to be a red-skinned variety)
Many Sloes (Blackthorn)
An abundance of Blackberries!!
Are you good with music and words? Could you turn this list into a wassailing type of song? (like the partridge in a pear tree). Many thanks to Kaaren for writing the poem Orchard Barn Acre to commemorate our Gate-opening to the site.
This tithe map shows that this area was orchard in 1838, probably much longer.
