The fourth 5-day Green Oak Timber Frame course - June 2009

This was the last of the four 5-day courses scheduled for this spring/summer. During this time participants have repaired the south and west elevations of the barn - crafting new feet to elderly posts, scarfing old studs and braces with new green oak - giving a new lease of life to some very old timbers, and more. Sole plates have also been replaced. The west elevation of the barn (front) has been transformed both in appearance and structure - see photos below. AND there has been much learning about working as a team and the health benefits of using predominantly hand tools.

This is what some of the participants say about the course:-

  • 'I found it a unique opportunity to learn oak carpentry skills with a practical basis while working as part of a team. I had always assumed this type of experience would only be available to those already within the trade and not enthusiastic amateurs. I would certainly be interested in taking the skills learnt further and also attending other similar courses.''Very well run, very well taught and exceeded all my hopes and expectation for the week.'
  • 'Fantastic place, fantastic company and Rick has excelled himself! The building has plenty of potential for further courses.'
