What a Great Week - Justine's Story - March 31st 2009

What a great week. It may have started with a few apprehensions. These things often do being the first course and a group of strangers coming together, but it turned into a very satisfying and fulfilling experience. As I was there to support the course, my experience was very different to that of the participants. Whereas most of their time was spent working with the green-oak using traditional tools, my time was spent preparing food and as many cups of tea possible. As the make-shift kitchen area is near the to barn I did feel a part of what was going on, it was great to hear the gentle chatter of the guys and the quiet workings of traditional tools. It was a delight to be so close to a construction area with no electrical noises, be they working equipment or blaring radios, also no losing of tempers or swearing.

It was fascinating to see progress on the site. I found myself being drawn in by the excitement of seeing the new sole plate fitted and new studs going in. I was also mesmerised by the peg making process using a traditional shave horse, so much so that I had to have a go and try to produce a peg or two that could be used on the building.
