Free Gardening with Nature mini workshops, funded by Frank Jackson Foundation. These family friendly, fun sessions run on Saturdays or Tuesdays from April - September 2021


Monday 6th - Friday 10th September 2021

Traditional timber framing including oak roof construction (CPD)

Learn traditional timber framing using traditional tools, techniques and locally sourced green oak. Course led William Clement-Smith, supported by the Orchard Barn team

Timber Frame Restoration Skills (CPD)

Discover why old buildings get damp and how to remedy it. Learn how to use lime. Understand traditional timber frames and how to repair. Conservation experts Mike McConnell, Gemma Sayers and Sarah Partridge lead the way.

Wooden Roof Tiles - Shingles (CPD)

Learn how to convert logs into shingles using a traditional woodland tools - cleaving with a froe, siding up with a side axe and final dressing using a draw knife. Course led by Sarah Partridge, Centre Manager of Orchard Barn

Hurdle Making

Develop your skills in riving (controlled splitting), hewing (shaping with an axe), shaving (with a draw knife) and greenwood joinery to make a small Suffolk gate hurdle (to take home). Led by Master Bodger Will Wall.
